For women over 40, understanding and following the national breast cancer screening guidelines and the recommendation of your care providers is an important part of maintaining your health.  Mammograms are the best way to find breast cancer early, when it is easier to treat and before it is big enough to feel or cause symptoms.

    You currently don't meet the guidelines You currently do not meet the criteria for either high risk of breast cancer or an overdue screening, however we encourage you schedule regular screenings, every two years starting at age 50 if you are not at high risk.

    You have the choice to start screening The decision to start breast cancer screening is an individual one. If you place higher value on the potential benefit of screening than the potential harms (false-positive results, unnecessary biopsies and overdiagnosis), you may choose to begin screening earlier than age 50. Please call your provider to discuss the best options for you.
